introduction

Ethiopia is one of the oldest and most poverty-stricken countries in the world. Ethiopia’s export receipts are almost completely dependent on cash crops, in particular coffee, placing the Ethiopian economy at the whim of the world’s commodity markets and making any long-term projects aimed at alleviating poverty and developing social programmes virtually impossible.

Adult literacy in Ethiopia is currently below 40%, although there is a large disparity between males and females (50% and 25%, respectively).

The age of the average Ethiopian is 17 years compared to 39 years in the Europe. It is clear, therefore, that in order for Ethiopia to develop its economy and reduce dependency on cash crops, education is key.
